ooo, neither tbh. Unless its a one-shot or a mini fic where I add a S/O or like my unpublished Uber fic where I had to add several OG characters, I don’t like adding new ones bc I think it disrupts the story a lot and I normally don’t read fics when people do that. And personally, unless it’s the ones that are supposed to be halrious and satire, I think self-inserts are kinda cringey bc most people who write them over-sexulize the characters and add weird stuff in that makes me cringe (key word: MOST not ALL) but also I just cant imagine myself dating someone let alone my comfort characters.

if you have a scene you want to write for a fic, start writing it but ONLY WRITE THE DIALOGUE. You can add who said it but I do it all the time and it gives me new ideas and gradually helps me continue a fic. It’s also easier to add detail in between when you are focused on that instead of getting to the next dialogue scene.

No cuz like picture purly as a stereotypical like jock/nerd high school couple with a twist

Curly and ponyboy are actually acquaintences to begin with, they were friends as kids, but kind of drifted apart and now they only nod to each other in the hallways

Curly gets into the habit of literally just taking Ponyboy’s homework in their shared classes and making a big show out of it and then copying the answers (but when no ones looking he always gives it back) and they kind of become lowkey rivals for a while

But then they get partnered up for the same project and he doesn’t need to copy the homework because they’ve worked on it together

Whenever they have to work outside of school they meet up somewhere like a restaurant (because sodapop and darry would never let curly within 20 feet of their house and curlys house is way too hectic) but they always got off topic

Like one time they plan to meet up at Dairy Queen and they get ice cream but then curlys like “well we shouldn’t work while eating what if we get food on it” and ponyboy is like yes that is a good idea that could not possibly go wrong and then they finish and curly is like well I’m gonna smoke a cigarette and ponyboy is like me too yes great idea and then while they’re outside they absolutely forget and just leave

Like just up and leave don’t even work on the project for the rest of the day

And they start lowkey bonding like curly finds out ponyboy is actually pretty funny and he’s pretty interesting and ponyboy realizes curly’s actually a sweetheart and is a lot more subdued when he’s not putting on a show for his friends

And then curly discovers if he needs help with the homework or even answers he can just ASK because one time ponyboy saw him struggling with a math problem and casually just told him how to do it and curly was like wait... being nice can be helpful?

So now they sit next to each other in class and don’t steal from each other or anything

And curlys friends are like hey why do you hang out with him he’s not cool and curlys like no you’re right 😍

Anyway no curly isn’t a football player but like he’s like. A Cool Jock and he has a letterman jacket (it’s not his tho nobody knows where he got it like in all seriousness) and he does NOT give it to ponyboy because “ew what man” but he does let him borrow it outside of school sometimes

Ponyboys like shivering and curly notices and makes a big show out of being like “oh my god it’s so hot in here oh wow I need to take off my jacket” and just casually leaves it directly next to him and ponyboy knows that means he wants him to wear it but doesn’t wanna say it outright

They find comfort in each other & being able yo express things to each other.

So when time comes that curly gets out, it’s like they’ve already been growing close together for a while now. & everything in very natural in the flow of taking their conversations from letters to face to face. & I think Curly has a lot of trauma that he doesn’t really share (because of his family & reformatory & stuff). * at first he drove ponyboy crazy, but then one class curly learned that if he whispered (or as quiet as his voice can go bc we all know this boy can’t whisper) his comedic genius to ponyboy instead of shouting it to whole class, that ponyboy will giggle and respond with a joke of his own

* curly honestly forgot how funny ponyboy could be when he spoke his mind, since he was so quiet usually.

* most of the time ponyboys quiet remarks had curly sent out of the class for laughing

* ponyboy wont admit it but health class soon became his favourite class

* at the end of the semester the teachers realized it was the only class curly attended so they started putting curly in more of ponyboys classes

* he distracted ponyboy but ponyboy was having fun so he didn’t let his grades slip or let on to darry or soda bc he knew they would do something about it to change their classes

* they become really close and one day curlys like

* “why’d u stop hanging out with man i missed u”

* “darry and soda didn’t like it, they still wouldn’t, but they don’t know”

* after this they start to have like rlly deep conversations aswell as their usually joking around

* like the type you have at 3am at the sleepover deep

* “where do u think u go when u die?”

* “do u believe in ghosts”

* “do u think it’s true jenny got breast implants”

* the last one was curly

* they talked about it for 20 mins

* curly actually started getting okay grades too bc he and ponyboy always paired up for projects and shit

* around the time after christmas break ponyboy starts to develop a crush

* but u already know he doesn’t know what the feeling is for another two months

* curlys always liked ponyboy from afar before this and even more now they have started sharing more classes

* after ponyboy realizes his crush he goes back to being quiet around curly for about a week

* “ponyboy what the fuck why are u being all mime this week”

* he tries to go back to how he usually is but he gets blushy and flustered if curly jokingly flirts with him or he gets jealous if they talked about some girl

* curly notices but he convinces himself he’s overthinking and there’s no way ponyboy had a crush on him

* but it’s curly

* so he flirted more anyway

* and ponyboy was getting more comfortable again so one time he flirted back

* curly was so taken a back that he didn’t speak for the rest of class

* curly doesn’t really blush bc of his complexion but ponyboy could tell he got flustered but the way he bit his lip and started fidgeting with his pen

* after this ponyboy gets the idea of the possibility curly could like him too

* but they’re both so stupid that they dance around eachother for weeks, flirting back and forth and refusing to believe that they could like each other back

* then it happens

* ponyboy is running track one day by himself bc practice got cancelled for some reason and curlys walking out of detention late so he starts to head over

* then he sees the sight that is ponyboy sweating and exhausted and he’s like ohhhh mama

* immediately flustered

* so he sets out to even the score he has in his head (he’s so competitive he’ll make up competitions in his mind) and goes to fluster ponyboy too

* but ponyboy doesn’t see him yet to he head into the changing room

* curlys like shit i have to get him now or i’ll see him half naked and i’ll never win

* ofc he doesn’t consider waiting until pony’s done bc who do u think he is?? curly waits for nothing

* he rushes in and scares the living daylights out of ponyboy

* like this boy jumped like so far curly thought of suggesting he started jumping hurdles

* he also screamed like a girl

* so ye curly flustered him but not in the way he intended to

* when he calms down he feels bad

•they wouldve totally used the winning money to help the other at least a lil, them seeing each other was a shick bc they didnt think they would b there

•maybe im wrong here but i think only one person??? can win the money???? so this means that theyre happy to have each other, but each game the idea that one of em WILL die slowly creeps up on them, they do try to ignore it and dont like to bring it up

•since one of em is gonna die, they each make a small will and give it to the other, if pony dies, curly has to use his money to help darry and soda, if curly dies, pony has to help his family

•for games that require 2 ppl u already knowwwww curlys pairing up w pony, he will kick anyone out his way too

•its pony that ends up dying btw!! let that b known, curly DOES win, and he was using ponys death as motivation, curly started playing REALLLL dirty after pony died cause he was not letting ponys death go to waste

•ok all bs aside, i think they do dumb things daily, but its on a scale, yknow??? the crazy things i say they do def do happen but not AS often as it seems!!!

•they like, never 100% know where the other is, they have an IDEA, but they just ask around till they find each other,,,like two rat lovers in a maze,,,the prize isnt the cheese,,,but its finding the other, THATS,,,the real exit,,

•id like to think that curly brings pony along to help him fuck w his #enemies!! DOES pony wanna b apart of the beef??? not not rlly, but as long as it doesnt involve straight up jumping them, pony’ll go, ponys loyal but not “im not gonna help u jump someone idk” kinda loyal

•on a similar note, dare i say sometimes curly also takes pony along to do some of tims work w him, they arent THAT dangerous otherwise tim wouldnt let curly do it, plus all pony rlly does is stay in the car, curly likes it that way bc 1) makes him look more cool and mysterious 2) keeps pony safe

•shhhh dont tell anyone i told u but they try to sneak into bucks place sometimes shhhhhh, but it never works so they just hang out at an arcade, particularly the pinball machine

darry,dally, and tim- they have little to no genuine support system and have to harbor everything they go through pretty much alone and bottle shit up cause growing up quickly sucks

tim- his parents werent rlly parents, so he had to emotionally mature fast and understand what they did wrong in life and in having kids so that he could better take care of angela and curly, he learns quickly that looking out for ur own blood can save ur skin more than yknow it, his parents arent around rlly anymore and he doesnt exactly know where they run off to even if they come back home for a few days but he knows theyll never learn that

angela- she canonically had a break down about her life being actual dogshit and bryon says that in the morning she’ll go back to her own stone cold strong self cause thats just the way she is, that's just the way she's learned to go through life

literally every singular one of the characters LMAOOO- its self explanatory HOWEVER i will highlight darry here

curly- faces a shit ton of oppression (even if u dont agree w him being queer hes still black to me but if u dont see him as black hes still a poc and a greaser) so hes just learned to do whatever he wants bc no matter what he does hes always gonna b judged so y not live life to the fullest and in a way that makes him happy, he’ll still be shunned, but at least he’ll be happy

tim- i cant properly find the words to explain it, but someone needs to check up on this nigga fr, a good portion of the neighborhood is religious, especially the older ppl yet they always judge him for one thing and another, nobody is rlly genuinely hoping (or in this case praying) he gets better

curly- shameless reminder that i ship purly, so I thought about curly saying this to pony for a sec cause i think cures that type guy to just explore the world any way he wants and he'll do anything to get someone to join him in on it

the shepards but most particularly angela- for some reason she held her parents in a high light cause unlike some kids in the neighborhood they had them both, curly and tim knew this wasn't rlly the case very quickly and as angela grew up, bit by bit she knew what they meant and would lay or even cry in bed over it
